Introduction to Adverbs

That one extra word, 'happily,' paints a whole new picture in our minds! Words that do this special job are called adverbs. An adverb is a word that modifies (or adds more information to) a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. They answer questions like How?, When?, Where?, and To what extent?. Mastering adverbs is like getting a new set of tools to make your writing and speaking more powerful and precise.

Let's Learn with an Example

Let's look at this sentence: 'The curious cat crept silently toward the very big mouse.'

First, I'll look for the action words, or verbs. I see the verb 'crept.' Now I'll ask myself, 'How did the cat creep?' The sentence tells me the cat crept 'silently.' So, silently is an adverb because it describes the verb 'crept.'

Next, I'll look for describing words, or adjectives. I see the adjective 'big' describing the 'mouse.' I'll ask, 'How big was the mouse?' The sentence says it was 'very' big. The word very is an adverb because it modifies the adjective 'big,' telling us to what extent it was big.

By following this process, I can see that adverbs add important details. 'Silently' tells me about the cat's action, and 'very' emphasizes the mouse's size. Finding the word the adverb modifies helps me understand its job in the sentence.
