2.2.3 Review Times of The Day and School Day

Telling minutes

In previous lessons, you’ve learned the basics of telling time in Japanese, focusing on hours. Today, we’ll build on that knowledge by learning how to add minutes to the time. Specifically, we’ll focus on times that end in number 0 and 5 minutes.

Basic Structure for Telling Time:

Hours (じ - ji)

Minutes (ぷん/ふん - pun or fun)

For times ending in 0 :
Combine Number (hour) + じ (ji) + Number (minutes) + っぷん (ppun)
Example : はちじにじゅっぷん　(Hachi ji nijyuppun)　ー 8:20

For times ending in 5 :
Combine Number (hour) + じ (ji) + Number (minutes) + ふん (fun)
Example : はちじにじゅうごふん　(Hachi ji nijyuugo fun)　ー 8:25

Instruction: Can you try to create a sentence "I have .... class at ....." by adding the time above to the sentence you have created on the previous page? Remember, you MUST add the particle "に ni" next to the time.

あさって　asatte : The day after tomorrow

よ yo : 4　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　じゅういち jyuu ichi : 11

あした、ごじはんににほんごのじゅぎょうがあります

Note:
はん (han) means "half-past", when using this word,
no need to add ふん・ぷん (fun/pun)

​Note:
You can replace あります (arimasu) with ありません (arimasen) to say
"I don't have ..."

いま　ima : Right now/now
きょう　kyou : Today
あした　ashita : Tomorrow
あさって　asatte : The day after tomorrow

PARTICLE OOから (kara) OOまで (made)

In Japanese, から (kara) まで (made) means "from... to...".
It shows a range or period, like a time frame or distance.
You use から (kara) to show the starting point and まで (made) to show the ending point.

​Example:
いちじからにじまでです
ichiji kara niji made desu
From 1 to 2 O'clock

いちじはんからにじごふんまでです
ichiji han kara niji go fun made desu
From 1:30 to 2:05

​NOTE :
あさ asa / ごぜん gozen : In the morning / A.M.
ひる hiru / ごご gogo : In the afternoon / P.M.

​Example:
えいごのじゅぎょうはあさくじはんからじゅうじまでです。
Eigo no jyugyou wa asa kuji han kara jyuuji made desu.
English class is from 9:30 to 10:00 in the morning

​NOTE :
Remember to use the suffix じ (ji) after the time to mark the hours and ふん・ぷん (fun/pun) after the time to mark the minutes. Example : いちじごふん ichiji go fun : 1:05
