• 18th century - Germany did not exist as a nation

  • divided into units such as kingdoms

• Kingdom of Prussia - most powerful

  • 1835 - studied Britain

  • By 1850s - textile factories, iron works, railroads, and coal mines

• By 1913 - German industrial output surpassed Britain and was second only to the United States

Nationalism

• ​It is rooted in a shared common identity

• This was the driving force behind unification as one nation

• United by a common language, common history, real and mythical stories of common ancestors, religion, traditions

• When threatened - the people unite together against a common enemy

• Manufactured their foreign threats

• King Wilhelm I - ruler of Prussia

• Otto Von Bismarck - Prussian Prime Minister

  • 1862 - declared he would rule Prussia with "blood and iron"

  • Goal: unify German

  • incited 3 wars (Denmark, Austria, France)

• each victory more German states united with Prussia

• 1864 - British and French also want trade

• 1868 - rebellions against the shoguns, want to restore the emperor

• aka the Meiji Restoration

Imperialism

• ​conquering other lands for their natural resources

• Goal: Do NOT become imperialized

• Studied British, German, and American industries

  • Politics, Military, Education

• Government built the factories

  • sold to Zaibatsu

  • avoided foreign debt
