Students will come across simple texts that deal with their daily lives, as well as more complex texts which deal with issues beyond students' lives or their fields of study.

Skimming

Skimming is a reading technique used to quickly grasp the main idea or overall meaning of a text without focusing on every word or detail. Readers usually look at titles, headings, topic sentences, and keywords to understand the general message.

For example, when skimming the passage about pets, we notice words like companionship, values, kindness, and responsibility, which help us understand that the text is mainly about how pets not only provide companionship but also teach humans important life values that benefit individuals and society.

Scanning

Scanning is sweeping your eyes (like radar) over part of a text to find specific pieces of information. It is to quickly locate specific information from a large quantity of written material. Unlike skimming, where readers glance over the entire content, scanning involves a more targeted approach. Readers actively look for keywords, dates, names, or specific data, effectively ‘scanning’ the text for the required information.
