Assigned Reading
d'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths
d'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths How Gaea, known to the Greeks as Mother Earth, came to be, no one knows. But when the Sky, known to the Greeks as Uranus, met her, they fell in love and had six Titan sons and six Titaness daughters.
Next, they had three Cyclopes, who were not beautiful like their older siblings, but were very strong. Cronus, who overpowered his father Uranus to become lord of the universe, wanted to make sure he kept his position as ruler. Each time his wife Rhea gave birth, he swallowed the child so that they could not grow up to overpower him. But Rhea, with the help of Mother Earth, hid her seventh child. This child-Zeus-married Metis, who helped him trick Cronus into eating a magic herb that forced him to vomit up his five other children, who rose up against their father.
Cronus fled and Zeus became lord of the universe, along with his brothers and sisters. Together, they destroyed the Titans, and a palace named Olympus was created above the clouds for the gods. Hera was the queen and Zeus's favorite wife, as well as his sister. She was very jealous of all Zeus's affection and tormented all his other wives. lo, a beautiful Greek woman chosen by Zeus as one of his wives, was changed into a cow so that Hera did not torment her. Once she found out that the cow was really lo, Hera sent a gadfly to sting her. lo jumped across the sea and ran to Egypt, where she gave birth to a son who later became king.
