The Unexpected Goal

Ramy Moral wasn't exactly known for his athletic prowess. In fact, at Al-Faisaliah Islamic School in Riyadh, he was mostly known for his love of books and his uncanny ability to trip over air. Gym class was, to put it mildly, a source of anxiety. While his classmates excelled at football and basketball, Ramy usually found himself on the sidelines, nursing a scraped knee or trying to decipher the rules of the game.

One sweltering afternoon, during a particularly brutal football practice, Ramy was assigned to be the goalkeeper. He groaned inwardly. Goalkeeping required quick reflexes, agility, and a certain amount of fearlessness – qualities he felt he severely lacked. He imagined the ball whizzing past him, the disappointed sighs of his teammates, and the inevitable teasing that would follow.

As the practice began, Ramy braced himself for disaster. He stood awkwardly in front of the net, his hands clammy, his eyes darting nervously from the ball to the approaching players. The first few shots were easily deflected by the more experienced players on his team. But then, a particularly strong kick sent the ball hurtling towards the goal.

Ramy froze. He saw the ball, a blur of black and white, coming straight at him. He knew he should move, should jump, should do something, anything! But his feet were rooted to the ground. Just as he was about to close his eyes in anticipation of the impact, something unexpected happened.

A voice, his own voice, echoed in his head. It wasn't a shout, but a quiet, firm whisper: "Believe in yourself, Ramy. You can do this." He didn't know where the voice came from, but it snapped him out of his paralysis. In a split second, he lunged forward, extending his arms.

The ball slammed into his gloves with a resounding thud. He stumbled backward, but managed to hold onto it. He had caught it! A collective gasp went up from the field. Even the coach looked surprised. Ramy, still slightly dazed, stared at the ball in his hands, then back at the astonished faces of his teammates.

For the rest of the practice, Ramy played with a newfound confidence. He wasn't perfect, of course. Some shots still got past him. But he saved more than he missed, and each save fueled his belief in himself. He realized that the voice he had heard wasn't magic, but his own inner voice, reminding him of his potential.

That day, Ramy didn't just save goals; he saved himself from his own self-doubt. He learned that even someone who trips over air can find their footing, and that believing in yourself, even when it seems impossible, can lead to unexpected victories. From that day on, Ramy still loved his books, but he also learned to appreciate the power of believing in himself, both on and off the field.
