​What are Idioms?

Idioms are special expressions used in everyday language. They are groups of words put together, but their meaning is not the same as the words’ dictionary meanings. Instead, idioms have a figurative (hidden) meaning that native speakers understand.

​Example:

“It’s raining cats and dogs.”
Literal meaning: Cats and dogs are falling from the sky (which is not true).
Idiomatic meaning: It is raining very heavily.

​Why do people use idioms?

• To make language more colorful and interesting.

  • Instead of saying “I’m very tired,” people might say “I’m worn out.”

• To express feelings and ideas in a creative way.

  • Instead of “start talking,” people might say “break the ice.”
