Three sounds of -ed

• Regular verbs in past end in –ed, but the sound changes.

• There are 3 ways to pronounce it:

1. /t/ → like worked

2. /d/ → like played

3. /ɪd/ → like wanted

The simple rule (there is a complex rule)

Just “follow the last sound”:

• If the verb ends in a sharp sound, –ed sounds like /t/ (worked, asked).

• If the verb ends in a smooth sound, –ed sounds like /d/ (played, cleaned).

• If the verb ends in /t/ or /d/, –ed is /ɪd/ (wanted, needed).

Quick Comparison

• /t/: worked, washed, asked

• /d/: played, cleaned, called

• /ɪd/: wanted, needed, decided

• I worked at McDonald’s yesterday.

• She played basketball after school.

• They wanted more fries.

• He cleaned the table before leaving.

• We asked for extra cheese.

• The cashier needed more change.

• My friend called me at lunch.

• The teacher asked a question.

• She decided to order a salad.

• We washed our hands before eating.
