Article 100

The primary purpose of Article 100 in the National Electrical Code (NEC) is to provide definitions for essential terms used throughout the code. It acts as a reference point for understanding the specific meaning of words and phrases relevant to electrical installations and safety.

the maximum amount of electrical current, measured in amperes, that a conductor (like a wire or cable) can safely carry continuously under specified conditions without overheating or damaging the conductor or its insulation.

Ampacity

a safety device designed to prevent electrical fires caused by arcing faults. These faults, often resulting from damaged or loose wiring, can generate intense heat and potentially ignite nearby materials.

AFCI

a wire or combination of wires suitable for carrying electric current. This can include bare conductors (without insulation), covered conductors (with non-insulating coverings), and insulated conductors

Conductor

a house, apartment, or other place of residence.

Dwelling

a point on a building's electrical wiring system where electrical current can be taken to power devices

Outlet

unit of an electrical system that, other than a conductor, is intended to carry but not utilize electrical energy, or carries or controls electric energy as its principal function
