Understanding subtle meaning differences in advanced contexts
By Diana Cretu
2
When both tenses are grammatically correct, what changes?
✅ Meaning, tone, or emphasis.
Present Simple = habits, facts, permanent situations, general truths
Present Continuous = temporary actions, changes, trends, emotional nuance, and politeness
3
Habits and routines: I drink coffee every morning.
Permanent situations: He lives in Madrid.
Facts / general truths: Water boils at 100°C.
Narration and summaries: Hamlet kills Claudius at the end.
Headlines: Government bans plastic bags.
Performative verbs: I promise to help you.
examples of
performative verbs:
acknowledge, assure, authorize, congratulate, contend, declare, demand, deny, forgive, guarantee, order, pledge, predict, promise, quit, refuse, resign, second, swear, vow, warn
Performative verbs are verbs that, by their utterance, perform the action they describe. In other words, saying the verb makes the action happen. For example, saying "I promise" actually performs the act of promising.
💡
4
Temporary situations: I’m working from home this week.
Trends / changes / development: Prices are rising.
Storytelling/literature, to make it more vivid: I'm heading home from work and the traffic slows to a crawl.
Annoyance / emotion (with adverbs like always): She’s always leaving dirty dishes.
Politeness / tentativeness: I’m hoping you’ll reconsider.
Rhetorical questions: What’s the world coming to?
5
💡We choose the continuous over the simple to:
Sound more polite: I hope vs I’m hoping
Sound less certain: We expect vs We’re expecting
Show annoyance: He’s always interrupting me!
Emphasise characteristic behaviour: She’s always offering to help.
Add vividness in storytelling and summaries.
6
📌 Stative Verbs (usually not continuous):
Mental states: know, believe, understand
Possession: have, own, belong
Senses: see, hear, smell
7
❗Some verbs can be both stative and dynamic depending on meaning:
have
Stative: She has a car. (= possession)
Dynamic: She is having lunch. (= doing an activity)
taste
Stative: It tastes great. (= opinion)
Dynamic: He is tasting the sauce. (= trying it now)
These verbs change meaning depending on whether they're describing a state or an action.
8
📌 Performative Verbs
Use the present simple with certain verbs when saying them does the action:
I promise I’ll be there.
I apologise for the delay.
I resign from the board.
I suggest we move on.
These are often used in formal situations or speech acts.
✅ Saying them = doing them
