Subjects & Verbs Must Agree

​They must agree in number!

• I am a Taylor Swift fan.

• My friends and I listen to her music often.

• She is a great songwriter.

• My daughter still wears her concert T-shirt.

Using: There is / There are

​Not sure? = Look ahead & see

• There is a volleyball team coming to Regina soon.

• There is a baseball tournament next week,

• There are two volleyball teams at the U of R next week.

• There are 3 baseball tournaments for my son this season.

Prepositional phrases

​Mentally cross out the prepositional phrase!

• The price of travelling is high. (The subject is price.)

• The price of Taylor Swift tickets was high. (The subject is price.)

• The fans at her concert were singing. (The subject is fans.)

• One fan at her concert got a hat. (The subject is one fan or he/she.)

Some words are always singular!

​One & Each

• One of my favourite foods is kimchi!

• One of her greatest fears is finding a mouse in her house.

• Each of my friends is really funny.

• Each child likes to waterski.

  Someone, anyone, everyone, no one and every are also singular!

Some words are always plural

​Both & Several

• Both of her parents are doctors.

• Both of her friends are moving away.

• Several of her family members live in India.

• Several of her siblings are travelling to visit.
  

Be careful with some...

​It can be singular or plural!

• Some of the excitement at the Canada Day celebration occurs during the fireworks.

• Some of the musicians perform well into the night.

In this situation, look at the noun in the prepositional phrase!
