Paper 1 Walkthrough

As your exam is in just a few days, we're going to go through a paper together with a reminder of exam skills and timings.

Let's start off by checking what you know about the exam...

Paper 1 - Text 1

• The first text is shorter.

• It will be a 19th Century nonfiction text.

• Questions 1-3 are about text 1.

• You can find your answers to question 1 as you read.

​Question 2 - Evaluation

In lines 3–12 the writer tries to show that yawning in public is wrong Evaluate how successfully this is achieved.

Give three reasons for your opinion and use examples from lines 3–12.

It's important that your reasons are from the text and not just what you already think!
You must give three reasons to get above 3 marks.

​Question 2 - Possible reasons

• Vivid descriptions of the reactions of others help the reader to picture how disgusted they are by the boy yawning: "his father has let his hat fall to the ground", "shocked", "shows her surprise"

• Use of speech to show the father's strong reaction. "I am ashamed" or "No one will wish to see you."

• Strong language to make yawning seem disgusting - "vulgar"

• The father's reaction may seem over the top, undermining the credibility of what he says.

• No real reason why yawning in public is wrong, other than that others don't like it.
  
  

​Question 2 - Example answer

The writer is successful in showing that yawning in public is wrong by showing the father's strong reaction: "I am ashamed to acknowledge that you are my son." This could appeal to the reader's emotions as no child would want to be the source of shame or disappointment for their family.

In lines 3–12 the writer tries to show that yawning in public is wrong Evaluate how successfully this is achieved.

Give three reasons for your opinion and use examples from lines 3–12.

- A brief explanation of how this quote supports your point.

• It is the same layout and mark scheme as question 2 so you need to give three reasons

‘This article explains why sleep is important for children of all ages’.

Based on your evaluation of the text, how far do you agree with this opinion?

Be prepared to share your reasons.

Question 6

This question is also on evaluation but is worth 12 marks.

You need to evaluate how much you agree with the statement that's given.

You need to:
1. Show that you've understood the ideas in the text
2. Give an opinion on the statement
3. Support your opinion with quotes

Question 6 - Possible answers

• The text gives statistics on how much sleep children of all ages need, making seem like a reliable source.

• The text talks about the ill effects of lack of sleep.

• It gives more guidance on how to get children to sleep rather than why it is important.

• The focus is mainly on younger children rather than children of all ages.

​Question 6 - Example answer

I partly agree with the statement because it talks about the sleep needed at a variety of ages. For example, "Ten hours are supposed to be needful for schoolboys, and eight for adults." This use of statistics shows the writer is trying to give clear guidance based on age, which supports the idea that sleep is important for everyone.

However, I do not fully agree because.....
