Review: 4-Quadrant Coordinate Plane

By Janet McClellan

2

media

A two-dimension surface formed by two number lines. We can use the coordinate plane to graph points, lines, and more.

1) The Coordinate Plane

3

2) X-Axis

The horizontal line in a coordinate plane. The x-axis only moves left to right

media

4

3) Y-Axis

The vertical line in a coordinate plane. The y-axis only moves Up and Down

media

5

Multiple Choice

The x-axis moves in what direction on the coordinate plane?

1

Only Right

2

Only Left

3

Both Left and Right

4

Both Up and Down

6

Multiple Choice

The y-axis moves in what direction on the coordinate plane?

1

Only Up

2

Only Down

3

Both Left and Right

4

Both Up and Down

7

4) Origin

The two axes meet at a point called the origin. The ordered pair for the origin is (0,0).

Always start at the origin and move left/right THEN up/down

media

8

media

(x,y)

Start at the origin first

  • x ALWAYS comes first and this tells me to move left or right

  • y comes second and this tells me to move up or down next.

  • EX: (3,5)

This tells me to start at the origin and move 3 to the right and 5 up

5) Ordered Pairs

9

Multiple Choice

The ordered pair (2, 8) wants me to move how?

1

2 to the right and 8 up

2

2 to the right and 8 down

3

2 to the left and 8 up

4

2 to the left and 8 down

10

Multiple Choice

The order pair (-5, -8) means

1

left 5, down 8

2

left 5, up 8

3

right 5, up 8

4

right 5, down 8

11

media

The coordinate plane his broken into 4 quadrants.

  • QI is Quadrant one where all ordered pairs will be positive (+x, +y)

  • Q2 is Quadrant two where the ordered pairs are (-x,+y)

  • Q3 is Quadrant three where all of the ordered pair is negative (-x, -y)

  • Q4 is Quadrant four where the ordered pairs are (+x, -y)

6) Quadrants on the Coordinate Plane

14

Reflections

  • Reflections flip a figure on the coordinate plane.

  • Changes the orientation of a figure.

  • Can be flipped across, the x-axis, y-axis, or both.

  • Which axis is the triangle reflected across in the figure to the right?

Same Quadrant? Subtract!

  • We can find the distance between points that lie in the same quadrant, like the Ferris Wheel and the Rollercoaster, using subtraction.

  • The Rollercoaster is at (5, 2)

  • The Ferris Wheel is at (5, 6)

  • |6| - |2| = 6 - 2 = 4

  • The Ferris Wheel and Rollercoaster are 4 spaces apart.

Different Quadrant? Add!

  • We can find the distance between points that lie in the different quadrants, like the Restrooms and the Water Slide, using addition.

  • The Restrooms are at ( 4 , -4 )

  • The Water Slide is at ( -3 , -4 )

  • |4| + |-3| = 4 + 3 = 7

  • The restrooms and water slide are 7 spaces apart.
