STAAR Blitz Day 7-Adding and Subtracting Decimals

The decimal point separates the whole number part from the fractional part.

Vocabulary

• Sum- the answer to an addition equation

• Difference- the answer to a subtraction equation

LINE UP YOUR PLACE VALUES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

• You can use the decimal to keep your place values in line!

• You will NOT always have both a tenths and hundredths place.

• Turn your paper sideways to track the place values.

When you're adding decimals:

• Be sure to line up the decimals

• Be sure to add the tenths to the tenths, and the hundredths to the hundredths

• Remember that ten tenths is one one

1. Line up decimals vertically

2. Add zeros as a place holder

3. Add as you would add whole numbers

​Rules of adding decimals

​If a number does not have a decimal point, add a decimal point to the end of the number.

Numbers without decimals

When you're subtracting decimals:

• Line up your place values!

• Regroup place values if needed!

• Don't forget to check your work!

1. Line up your decimals

2. Add 0's after the decimal point

3. Subtract as you would with whole numbers

4. Just move the decimal point down into your answer

Rules of subtracting decimals

Remember- Subtracting requires:

• Regrouping place values when necessary

• Checking your answer with addition

• Lining up your place values
