The Inverse Operation

Inverse operation means the opposite.

Division is like the opposite of multiplication.

Sharing equally

In division, we split the total (dividend) into groups.

6 / 2 = 3

because 6 split into groups of 2 gives us a total of 3 groups.

What is a dividend?

• A dividend is the number that is BEING DIVIDED

• Here is an example:

• 12 / 3 = 4

• The dividend in this equation is 12 because 12 is the number being divided.

What is a divisor?

• A divisor is the number that is BEING DIVIDED BY

• Here is an example:

• 12 / 3 = 4

• The divisor in this equation is 3 because 3 is the number being divided by.

What is a quotient?

• A quotient is the ANSWER of a division problem

• Here is an example:

• 12 / 3 = 4

• The quotient in this equation is 4 because 4 is the answer.

• The total

• The number of groups

• The size of the groups

• The math terms for these three parts of the quotient (the answer), the dividend (the total, and the divisor (what you are dividing by).

How many were left after making equal groups.

In the example, you start with 27 total and are making groups of 4. You are able to make 6 equal groups of 4 which is a total of 24. There are 3 left that can't fit into a group of 4.

What are the different ways to answer a division problem that has a remainder?

• ignore the remainder

• the remainder is the answer

• Add 1 to the quotient

Mrs. White is buying cupcakes for her class. The cupcakes come in boxes of 4. There are 22 students in her class. How many boxes of cupcakes does Mrs. White need to buy if she wants to give each student a cupcake?

Mrs. White needs to ADD 1 to the quotient of 5 so everyone can get a cupcake. Instead of 5 boxes of cupcakes, she needs to order 6 boxes.  (6x4=24, so everyone gets a cupcake)

At an amusement park, 162 people are waiting in line for a water ride. Each boat holds 5 people. How many boats will be completely filled?
