What is an inference?

An inference is a conclusion made on the basis of information presented.

When you are reading, you make inferences, or draw conclusions, based on information and evidence available in the text. The author does not directly state this information in the text; however, readers can logically conclude this information based on the details presented by the author.

What is an inference?

Look at the pictures on the next few slides.

What inferences can you make based on the pictures?

Write down some of your ideas as to what you think is happening in each picture.

What did you see?

Did you identify the following details?

• These people are on a bus. (The standing people are holding on to the poles so they do not fall when the bus moves.)

• Two women who are standing smell something bad. (They are holding their noses and/or their breath and making faces.)

• The man standing next to them in the striped shirt is unaware of the smell.

What did you see?

Did you identify the following details?

• These people are on the sideline of a Steelers football game; some are players (based on their uniforms) and some are coaches.

• Two players are holding a Gatorade bucket full of ice water and are planning on dumping it on a coach. The coach is unaware that this is going to happen.

• Based on the players and the smile on the coach's face, they must have won a big game!

Now, let's take a look at Paragraph 2 of "Civil Peace," and make some inferences!
