Galveston Hurricane

The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 was one of the deadliest natural disasters in U.S. history, causing immense destruction and loss of life in the city. In response to this devastating storm, a construction project began in 1903 to build a seawall, designed to protect the city from future hurricanes and storm surges. The seawall was a critical step in preventing similar damage and safeguarding the city's infrastructure. However, the hurricane's impact also led to a major shift in the economic development of Texas. Many of Galveston's major industries, particularly shipping and commerce, moved inland to Houston, which had more stable infrastructure and better access to railroads. This shift helped fuel Houston's growth and solidified its position as Texas's economic hub.

Spindletop and Howard Hughes Sr.

Spindletop was a major oil discovery in Texas, found in 1901 near Beaumont. It marked the beginning of a huge oil boom in Texas. During the boom, oil production soared, attracting many people and businesses to the area. However, this rapid increase in production led to a "boom and bust" cycle. A boom and bust cycle is when something grows very quickly (the boom) and then crashes just as fast (the bust), causing problems. Overproduction of oil caused prices to drop because there was too much oil and not enough demand.
Howard Hughes Sr., an inventor and oilman, played a key role in the petroleum industry by creating the rotary drill bit in 1908, which helped drill through tough rock layers. His innovation improved drilling efficiency and contributed to the growth of the oil industry in Texas.
