Water Potential and Osmosis

So, like diffusion, osmosis is a passive process where molecules move from high concentration to low concentration.

Osmosis is specific to water molecules and involves movement from HC to LC across a partially permeable membrane.

A partially permeable membrane is a membrane which has small holes in which allow small molecules through but not larger molecules.

A higher concentration of water is also referred to as a dilute solution.

A concentrated solution will have a lower concentration of water.

Water potential is a measure of the tendency of water molecules to diffuse (move) from one region to another.

HYPOtonic - a solution that contains a HC of water.

HYPERtonic - a solution that contains a LC of water.

ISOtonic - a solution that has the same water concentration as the cell.
