US History: The French and Indian War

The French and Indian War was a war over land, fought between the French and British colonists from 1954 to 1763

Each side had help from local Native Americans

The French built forts in Western Pennsylvania to protect their lands from the British army

They are Fort Presque Isle, Fort LeBoeuf, and Fort Machault.

In 1753, George Washington is sent to Fort LeBoeuf to speak with the French military leaders.

He plans to ask the French leaders to peacefully leave the British land. They refuse.

The French also built a fort at the Forks of the Ohio ( present day Pittsburgh).

Both the British and the French wanted this location. The French got it first.....

this fort was to be used as protection from the French Forces after George Washington’s failed attempt to capture Fort Duquesne in May of 1754

The fort was attacked on July 4, 1754 and defeated.

The British made a second attempt to capture Fort Duquesne in 1755

General Edward Braddock made this attempt.

He was stopped and defeated near present day Kennywood.

The British made a third attempt in 1758

John Forbes leads this effort.

Forbes successfully captures Fort Duquesne and renames it Fort Pitt.
