Understand Multiplication with Negative Integers

  • Multiplication is repeated addition: -4(3) = -4+(-4)+(-4)

  • Multiplication can be done in any order, known as the commutative property: -4(8) = 8(-4)

  • Any number multiplied by -1 is its opposite.

  • The product of two negative integers is positive.

  • The product of an even amount of negatives is positive: (-3)(-2)(-5)(-1) = 30

  • The product of an odd amount of negatives is negative. (-3)(-2)(5)(-1) = -30

Multiply & Divide with Negative Numbers

  • Rational Numbers are numbers that can be expressed as a fraction where the denominator cannot be zero.

  • Strategies that work for multiplying & dividing positive rational numbers work for negative rational numbers: +(+)=+,+(-)=-, -(-)=+, -(+)=-

  • Fractions can be rewritten as quotients of two numbers where the numerator is divided by the denominator: 45=4÷5=0.8\frac{4}{5}=4\div5=0.8

Express Rational Numbers as Terminating or Repeating Decimals

  • Rational numbers can be expressed a fraction where the denominator cannot be 0 and has either terminating or repeating decimal expansion.

  • To determine whether a rational number is terminating or repeating, divide the numerator by the denominator. If the decimal repeats, use the repeating bar notation to represent the repeating decimal. If a decimal terminates, it is called a terminating decimal.

  • If a decimal neither terminates nor repeats, it is called an irrational number.
