• We use can / can't to talk about abilities in the present.

Can you ski? Yes, I can.

• We use could and couldn't to talk about abilities in the past. My sister could run very fast, but she couldn't ride a bike.

• We don't use could when we talk about a specific occasion in the past. We use was / were able to.

The dog escaped, but I was able to catch it. ✔
