Lunar New Year is in January
or February to celebrate the
end of winter and welcome
the new things that will
come in spring.

The lunar new year starts
with the new moon and
people celebrate for 15 days
until the full moon.

Many East Asian countries like China, South Korea, Vietnam and more
celebrate Lunar New Year.

This holiday is also celebrated all around the world!

The decorations are red and
gold. The red color means good
luck. The gold color means
wealth and good fortune.

Many will celebrate by hanging
red and gold decorations
hoping for good luck and
wealth in the new year.

People will also make sure to have a
lucky dinner. When families visit each
other they will traditionally eat foods
such as oranges, dumplings and rice
balls. People eat oranges and other
dried fruits to make sure they have a
“sweet” new year.

The more food people make and eat
means they will have more good
things in the new year.

People give gifts to their family. The traditional
gift is a red envelope filled with money! The red
color is a symbol of luck. Many times, the gold
writing means wealth, luck, and adventure.

During this time, many
families take time to clean
their homes. They believe that
cleaning their homes is a way
to get rid of bad luck.

On New Years’ eve, many will
open the windows to let go of
the old year and welcome the
new year.

Right before the lunar new year,
people will go out to buy new
clothes. Wearing new clothes is
a way to welcome a new
beginning.

Many people wear red for the
lunar new year because red is a
color that means good luck. They
believe good luck will follow
them in the new year.

Each lunar new year is named after an animal in the Chinese Zodiac. There are 12 different animals. Each year is a new animal.
The year 2023 is the year of the rabbit!

On the 15th day, people will go out to enjoy the lights and lanterns.
They watch a parade of lights with lanterns of different shapes and sizes.
Some lanterns are shaped like animals, bugs and dragons. At night, a
fireworks show begins while people play instruments like drums.
