• ​Jackson claimed to represent the Common Man

• ​Thousands of people showed up to a party at his inauguration.

  • ​So many people that he had to flee out the back door of the White House

  • ​Showed how popular he was.

​Three Main Issues

• States Rights

• Indian Removal

​Tariff of Abominations

• ​Abomination = something that causes disgust/hatred

• ​Northern Senators passed most expensive tariff in history

  • ​Southern States hated it. (Made imported good more expensive to buy)

  • ​South Carolina wanted to Nullify it.

• ​Nullification: Idea that a state could abolish a law it thought was Unconstitutional

  • ​Used to fight the Alien & Sedition Acts.

​Nullification Crisis

• ​South Carolina passed the Nullification Act

  • ​Cancelled out the tariff.

• ​Jackson was furious at SC & his Vice President John C Calhoun of SC.

  • ​"If one drop of blood be shed in defiance of the laws of the United States, I will hang the first man of them I can get my hands on from the first tree I find."

• ​Asked Congress to pass the Force Bill so he could use Army to enforce tariff.

• ​No States supported SC, a lower tariff was agreed to.

​Indian Removal

• ​White settlers keep moving onto NA land.

• ​Jackson creates a new territory in Oklahoma to relocated Natives

• ​Natives didn't want to go

  • ​Had adopted "American" customs, lived with settlers.

• ​Worcester v. Georgia Supreme Court said Georgia couldn't force relocation.

• ​Jackson backed Georgia instead. "Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it.

​Trail of Tears

• ​1830 Congress passes Indian Removal Act

  • ​NA must move to Oklahoma (thought to be a vast desert)

• ​15k Cherokee and others were forced to trek thousands of miles on foot.

  • ​1/4 died

  • ​Little food/shelter. Most forced to leave with just what they had.

​National Bank

• ​2nd National Bank needed to be rechartered (granted permission to keep operating).

• ​Jackson hated the bank

  • ​Thought it favored the wealthy and cheated the common man.

• ​Refused to recharter it.

  • ​Caused inflation and a national panic

  • ​Ended up hurting the average person.

​Effects of Jackson

• ​By the end of his presidency, Jackson's supporters had turned on him.

  • ​Called him King Andrew I

  • ​Used the veto more than any president to that point.
