Growing Resentment Against Britain

Britain and those dang taxes

• October 1765- 9 colonies send representatives to the Stamp Act Congress.

• It was decided only the colonies could tax the colonies

• Boycotts were held in New York and Boston.

• This means they refused to buy British goods and hurt trade

• They wanted to cancel the Stamp Act

• In 1766 Parliament repealed (cancelled) the Stamp Act.

• In 1767 parliament created a new tax

• The Townshend Acts put a tax on mostly all goods that were imported.

• This again angered the colonists

• The colonists threatened violence so Britain sent more soldiers to the colonies

• The colonists did not want more soldiers in their cities

• In response to the Townshend Acts the colonist boycotted British goods again.

• Instead of importing cloth the Daughters of Liberty wove thier own.

• This organization of women labored day and night to make clothing so as not to buy from Britain.

• During this boycott British merchants lost money

• Parliament repealed the taxes on everything but Tea (Just to show it can still tax whatever it wants)

• The colonists still wanted representation

• Anger toward the British government continued to grow.
