​Double Replacement Reactions

There are four ways we express what state of matter compounds in a reaction are taking:

• (s) Solid

• (l) Liquid

• (g) Gas

• (aq) Aqueous - a substance dissolved in water

​We are going to start adding these to our reaction equations STARTING NOW.

Double-Replacement Reactions
• A double-replacement reaction occurs when

ions exchange between two compounds.

• The figure shows a generic double replacement

equation.

Replacement Reactions

• A solid product produced during a chemical

reaction in a solution is called a precipitate.

• All double replacement reactions produce either

water, a precipitate, or a gas.

​If you don't see any of this, there was NO REACTION.

​If there are no solid products, or water is not a product, then there is NO REACTION.
