1836

Houston and his army win the Battle of San Jacinto and captured Santa Anna. Shortly after this, the Treat of Velasco was signed and the Republic of Texas was born.

1845

Texas was annexed as the 28th state. Many members of Congress in northern states were against this because they didn’t want slave states to be more powerful.

1846-1848

The U.S. defeats Mexico and Rio Grande becomes the southern border of Texas and much of the southwest including California becomes part of U.S.

1850

The state of California joins the United States as a free state, creating further division between the north and the south.

1860

Abraham Lincoln was elected president. He opposed slavery and did not want it to expand to anymore states.
