Six Syllable Types

Objective: To understand one of six syllable types for decoding words.

Closed Syllables

Closed Syllable Training Video

​A syllable with a short vowel, spelled with another letter, ending in one or more consonants.

Examples: sip, flag, crunch

Open Syllables

​Syllable ends with a long vowel sound, spelled with a single vowel letter
Examples: hi, program, recent

​R follows a vowel and distorts the sound
Examples: cork, party, starting

Vowel Team Syllables

Magic e (vce) syllables

Consonant + le

​A consonant followed by an "-le"; must connect to another syllable type
Examples: giggle, bible, little
