Introduction

WHAT ARE NATURAL SOURCES OF WATER

Natural sources of water are those sources
that are naturally formed by the Earth’s
geographic activities. Some of these are;
rivers, lakes, ponds, groundwater, ice caps,
streams, etc.

EXAMPLES NATURAL SOURCES OF WATER

GROUNDWATER
Groundwater is the water contained in
aquifers (Figure 4.7). This is
replenished or recharged by
precipitation that percolates through the
soil to the water.

Surface water

It consists of any above-ground water which gets

collected. For instance, we have ponds, rivers, lakes,

oceans and more.

Surface water is the most used source of water. It

accounts to at least 80 per cent of the water used by

living beings.

The underground aquifers also contribute to

maintaining the level of surface water. While surface

water is easily accessible and found in abundance, we

have been misusing it for a long time now.

●PONDS

These are the fixed or standing sources of freshwater that

can be natural and artificial.

As such, ponds are habitats for many varieties of organisms

including plants, amphibians, fish, reptiles, waterfowl, insects

and even some mammals. Ponds are used for breeding

grounds for these species but also as shelter and even

drinking/feeding locations for other wildlife.

OCEAN WATER
We know that oceans are a great source of water.
However, what most people do not know is that
while it contributes to 97% of the water, the water
is not feasible to consume directly.

The ocean water contains a large amount of salt

and impurities. It requires a number of processes

like desalination to make the water fit for

consumption.

USES OF NATURAL SOURCES OFWATER

❏ Drinking and Domestic Use: Water is essential for human

survival and is used for drinking, cooking, bathing, and various
household purposes.

❏ Agricultural Use: Water is the primary input for irrigation,

which is crucial for growing crops, raising livestock, and
supporting agricultural productivity.

❏ Industrial Use: Industries use water for various purposes, such

as manufacturing, processing, cooling, and cleaning.

❏ Transportation: Navigable waterways, such as rivers and

canals, are used for the transportation of goods and people.
