Reading Decimals

• The least place value tells us how to read the decimal

• Look at:    1.927

• Because there is a 7 in the thousandths place, we read this decimal as one and nine hundred twenty-seven thousandths

Expanded Form

• A way to write a number where you can see the value of each digit

• Example: (4 x 1) + (7 x 0.1) + (3 x 0.01) + (2 x 0.001) = 4.732

Mixed number 

• We learned that you can write decimals as mixed numbers

• The whole number goes to the left of the fraction

• The least place value tells us what the denominator will be

• The digits after the decimal tell us what the numerator will be
