Classifying animals

• If an animal DOES NOT have a backbone, it is an INVERTEBRATE and should be classified as an INVERTEBRATE

• If you are asked to classify animals you are given characteristics, first look to see if they have backbones or no backbones.

Invertebrates

• do not have a backbone

• they can have an exoskeleton like crabs and hermit crabs

• Worms are also invertebrates

• all insects are invertebrates
