Lesson Objective: Students will begin to form strong and cohesive introduction and conclusion paragraphs for longer essays.

Facts about the introduction paragraph:
First thing your reader reads.
The introduction paragraph is where you "hook" your reader.
Introduction paragraph sets up information about your essay for your reader, giving them information they need to know.
Introduction paragraph contains a "thesis statement".

Thesis Statements:
Your thesis statement should:

Be one complete sentence.
A strong thesis includes the following components:

Here are sentences in an intro paragraph. Reorder them from the beginning to the end.
We are currently living in a world of constant discourse, both online and offline, where people will have prepared arguments for any debate one could think of, from the largest of conflicts to the smallest of petty arguments.
Sitting along with some of the most highly debated topics, stands a debate with passionate members along both sides of the argument; the strong “tacos vs burritos” argument.
The world we find ourselves in is a world that cannot judge simply based on taste alone, but rather, people pick their choice of food item based on numerous additional qualities, such as texture, portability, and value per dollar.
Despite the near endless debate about the topic, however, it is clear that one pick is the clear winner over the other; While some people prefer the taste of tacos, burritos are clearly better when looking at all the qualities of both foods.

With the knowledge of introduction paragraphs, work with your table groups to come up with some good thesis statements that cover how Martin changes how he feels during the course of the short story "The Medicine Bag".

Conclusions aren’t easy!
There are three major purposes in a conclusion paragraph:
Reflect on the major points of the essay without renaming them or adding new information;
To provide a finished feeling to your essay; and
to leave your reader thinking about your ideas, and maybe even wanting to read more from you!
We have stressed the importance of the introduction paragraph to hook your reader, but it is also very important for you to be able to clearly finish strong, so your writing can have a lasting impact.

Take a look at this
visualization; much like we talked about the introduction being a funnel, the conclusion should logically do the same, but in reverse: from narrow (information about your essay) to broad (why it should matter to your reader).

For the first sentence of your conclusion paragraph, you should restate the purpose of the essay, without repeating the thesis. Since your reader has all the context they need, you don't need to provide extra information.
Remind them of the purpose!

(remember, small to big!)
It would be untrue to state as fact that tacos have no merits over burritos, and one can even be in the mood for tacos when their preference is burritos; however, burritos are the clear choice between the two foods when compared objectively.
Burritos are the choice due to their more easily portable nature, their more varied flavors, and their better cost-to-food ratio.
We are living in a world of constant motion and movement, oftentimes without even the luxury of sitting down and enjoying a meal.
Keeping this in mind, one should be considering all of the factors when picking a lunch to bring with them or to purchase for themselves, beyond merely taste.

Here's some bonus tips!
Start by restating your thesis (without repeating it! restate the idea or purpose of the essay!)
Draw a deduction (a thought or lasting impression) from the facts of the essay.
Reflect on the significance of the topic.
Pose a question on why it is important to your reader, or what makes it interesting.
