are words that tell you if a noun is specific or general. They come before a noun in a sentence


Articles that refers to one thing you can name or identify is called a definite article.



The is a definite article.

I went to the baseball game last night.

The

"The" modifies a noun by saying it is a specific noun.

Example: Please grab the chair from over there by the window.

The refers to a specific chair in a specific location.


Example: Last October, I went to the best waterfall while hiking!

"The" modifies the noun waterfall.

When speaking in general about a thing, person, or place, you will use what is called an indefinite article.

A and an describe nouns that are general.






For example, I want a cat.

A few rules to follow:

-are only used with singular nouns.

-You use "a" when a noun starts with a consonant.

-You use "an" when a noun starts with a vowel.

A house on my street is painted bright pink.
-a comes before the noun house. House begins with a consonant so the article a is used.




At the park, an ant crawled on my shoe.
-an is used before the noun ant. Ant starts with a vowel so the the article an is used.
