In 1868, the Meiji Restoration marked the end of Japan’s feudal system, where the country was ruled by samurai and local lords. The emperor was restored to power, and Japan started focusing on modernization. This era was crucial for Japan’s transformation from a traditional society into a powerful, industrialized nation.

During the Meiji era, Japan studied and adopted industrial practices from European countries, especially Britain and Germany. They sent students and officials to learn about Western technology, military tactics, and industries. Japan quickly built modern factories, railways, and communication systems, and adopted Western styles in art, education, and government.

Within just 30 years, Japan’s economy and society were completely transformed. By the 1900s, Japan had a modern industrial economy, with factories producing textiles, steel, and other goods. Japan’s new industrial strength was tested when it fought China in the Sino-Japanese War over control of Korea. Japan’s modernized army and navy defeated China, proving that it was now a major power in Asia. This victory was important because it gave Japan its first overseas colonies and marked the beginning of its imperial expansion.
