  • In "The Surrender Tree" we will see the world from two different perspectives: Rosa and Lieutenant Death

  • We will be seeing Rosa as a symbol for good and Lieutenant Death as a symbol of evil

Section 1: Pages 3-9

In the first stanza, Rosa says there is a difference between how people see her and how she sees herself. People call her a witch because of her healing knowledge, but she considers herself just a simple girl

In the next stanza, Rosa talks about natural medicine. She wants to learn what each part of a plant does so that she can heal people

In the last stanza, Rosa compares herself to a bee. She is a valuable healing resources like a bee making honey, but people are scared of her knowledge

Comparing perspectives: Rosa vs. Lt. Death

In this last stanza, Rosa sets up the contrast or difference between what the slavehunters say versus what they actually do. Once again, things are not always as they seem. Lieutenant Death and his father are not fighting armies; they are kidnapping enslaved people.

Rosa uses key words in the poem. She notices that Lieutenant Death and his father are lying to their superiors, and she says they "exaggerate" to try to sound more brace

She also uses the words secret and hide to emphasize that they must not cross the slavehunters or they will put themselves in danger.

Comparing perspectives: Rosa vs. Lt. Death

How does this section of the stanza compare to what Rosa was saying on page 8 about lying?

What does this reveal about the characters?

Why is it important that the underlined portion about being human is right next to these lines about counting ears?

Who is really the more humane person in this situation?

Why do you think he is called Lieutenant Death?

13

WRiting:
Modifiers
media

Learners can:

  • differentiate between adjectives and adverbs

  • identify modifying words that can act as synonyms

14

media
  • Modifiers are descriptive words or phrases that give more details about something else in the sentence

  • We are going to focus on two types of modifiers: adjectives and adverbs

Modifiers

15

media
  • Adjectives are words that describe nouns (people, places, things, or ideas)

  • Example: The boy's soccer ball is multicolored.

    • Here, the adjective “multicolored” describes the noun “soccer ball.”

Adjectives vs. Adverbs

  • Adverbs are words that describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs

  • They often describe how, when, where, or to what extent something is done

  • Example: The learner worked independently on his paper

    • The adverb “independently” describes how the person “worked” on their essay. “Independently” is an adverb because it is modifying a verb.

16

Modifiers Walkthrough

To determine if a modifier is an adjective or adverb, you have to look at what the word is modifying.
