Steps to factor ax² + bx + c (when a = 1)

1) List the factors of the third term

2) Do they add to be the second term

3) Use proper signs

x² + 5x + 6 = (x + 2)(x + 3)

x² + 1x - 6 = (x - 2)(x + 3)

x² - 1x - 6 = (x + 2)(x - 3)

x² - 5x + 6 = (x - 2)(x - 3)
