Our organs work together!

When one or more organs work together, it's called an organ system.

For example...

But organ systems also work together!

They interact in a bunch of ways to carry out the complex functions we're used to, like: walking, eating, and growing up!

Example #1: Moving

On the surface level:

^{+ Muscles move bones to run}

But also, what is coordinating it all?

^{+ The nervous system!}

And where is it getting energy from?

^{+ The digestive system!}

Where do the cells get oxygen from?

^{+ The circulatory and respiratory systems!}

Example #2: Eating

You'd think it's just the digestive system turning food into nutrients, right? Well, that's one level...

It's also:

+ Bones (teeth, mandible) chewing

+ Muscles moving food along

+ Blood vessels carrying nutrients

+ Brain bossing everyone around

+ Hormones making you hungry/full

The things you do to keep alive must be done by more than one organ system!

That's what makes you an organism.

The Muscular System

Helps you move and protect body.

+ Covers bones/organs in layers

+ Contracts and relaxes to move

+ Consumes energy to work well

There are more than 600 muscles in a human body! Like:

+ Biceps, triceps, pectorals, etc.

The Skeletal System

Helps to move and protect organs.

+ Attached to muscles via tendons

+ Attached to bones w/ ligaments

+ Also creates blood cells!

An adult human has about 206 bones - children have more!

+ Long bones don't fuse until older
