In Spanish, past participles are often used as adjectives to describe the state of something. These are formed by adding "-ado" to the root of -ar verbs (like "cerrado" from "cerrar") or "-ido" to the root of -er and -ir verbs (like "roto" from "romper" or "escrito" from "escribir").
2
How do they work? Describe the resulting state or condition:
A past participle used as an adjective describes the result of an action on the noun. For example, in the sentence "La puerta está cerrada", "cerrada" describes the state of the door as a result of it being closed.
Placement before or after the noun: Typically, these adjectives are placed before the noun when they are in the attribute position (e.g., "la ventana rota") or after the verb "estar" or other linking verbs in the predicate position (e.g., "la ventana está rota").
3
Examples "La sopa servida está caliente." Here, "servida" describes the state of the soup as a result of having been served. "Llegaron con las tareas hechas." "Hechas" describes the state of the homework which has been completed.
