C + le (the L rule of CLOVER)

This is the first pattern we learned.

When you see a consonant followed by the letters le, this is a syllable. The letter e in this syllable will be silent.

Example:

Bottle
Viable

Silent E Rule (the E in CLOVER)

This is another pattern!

When you see a vowel, consonant, and then the letter E, this is the pattern! (VCe). The first vowel is long while the E is silent.

Example:
Ice
Take
