Had I...

Start with Had + Subject + Participle of verb

3

Had I known it was going to rain, I would've taken my umbrella.

Had + Subject + Participle of verb

Situation: You almost ate a food you're allergic to. Which would be problematic, but you didn't. So you're glad and say:

Woah! I'm glad I skipped that dish. Had I eaten that, I was gonna look like a balloon and my skin would turn red!
Had I seen this exam was coming, I would've prepared myself better.

You can express the idea that there would be a different result if something different happened, but also a sense of regret.

Had + Subject + Participle of verb

Had I been informed you have a coin collection, I would've given you this one from Rome that I got.
Tom: Harry, had I known you were a fan of horror movies, I'd have invited you to watch Halloween.
Ahhh... had I known that cute girl liked me, I could've asked her out.

You've seen many examples featuring the pronoun "I" as the subject, but you can use all the others as well:

Had + Subject + Participle of verb

Had the client gotten to the bakery 5 minutes earlier, he would've grabbed the last pão de queijo.
Had they prepared better, the team could've won the season.
Man, had she paid better attention to what I meant, she would understand I said I "find her looks groovy", not "goofy".
Now she's mad at me!
