• Symbolism is a literary device where objects, characters, actions, or settings are used to represent abstract ideas or concepts, adding depth and layers of meaning to a narrative.  

• While some symbols are commonly known and recognized others may differ from reader to reader based on their experiences and reading of the text

  • Example: symbol for wifi is widely recognized

• Theme subjects are words and phrases that identify an idea throughout a work

• Thematic statements are sentences that expand on the theme subject

• Example: a theme subject might be types of families, while a thematic statement might be “The bond between guardians and children goes beyond blood ties, encompassing bonds forged through shared experiences and chosen connections.”

Learners can:

• identify pronouns as adjectives  

• develop a thesis statement

• Pronouns: take the place of a noun

• Adjectives: describe or modify nouns or pronouns

• ​Pronouns can also be used as adjectives when they add information that describes a noun or another pronoun.

• A thesis statement is a strong claim that you make and is supported by the information you find through research.

• A strong thesis statement:

  • identifies the topic

  • is specific

  • is based on evidence

  • is interesting and important

• We will use the Brainstorming section from the Informational Writing Notes to create a thesis

• Open your Informational Writing Notes that we have worked on in class, you will be using it to guide your work

• If you need a blank copy, it is on page 8 in your edio lesson or on the Informational writing Project Padlet

• Today you are only completing the Thesis Statement section

• After you finish your thesis statement, the rest of class is choice time. You can be working on iReady practice, silent reading, get help from Mrs. Massack, or overdue edio lessons
