If you were to create a math equation that expressed momentum, what variables would you use to? How would you write the equation?
4
Momentum: a quantity of how much inertia a dynamic object has;
momentum = mass x velocity.
5
Momentum
(kg x m/s)
Kinetic Energy
(kg x m2/s2)
6
Open Ended
Compare and/or contrast the equations for Kinetic Energy and momentum.
7
8
Momentum is conserved
Momentum can be transferred from one object to another. If a system is a closed (meaning it does not experience any net external forces), momentum is conserved in that system

During the last shot of a billiards game, a cue ball is struck and travels toward an eight ball with a speed of 7.6 m/s. The cue ball has a mass of 0.17 kg, and the eight ball has a mass of 0.16 kg.
What is the initial momentum of the system?

The cue ball strikes the eight ball and comes to rest immediately. The eight ball begins traveling in the same direction that the cue ball had been traveling. Write an expression in terms of vf, eight for the final momentum of the system.

Use the law of conservation of momentum to determine the velocity of the eight ball after the collision. Assume both balls slide rather than roll, and neglect any frictional forces from the table.
