Introduction to Euclidean Geometry

• Euclidean geometry is named after the ancient Greek mathematician Euclid

• It's the study of flat, two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects

• Based on a set of postulates (assumptions) and axioms (self-evident truths)

• Forms the foundation for much of the geometry we study in school

Euclids 5 Postulates

1. A straight line can be drawn between any two points

2. Any straight line can be extended indefinitely in both directions

3. A circle can be drawn with any center and any radius

4. All right angles are equal to each other

5. Parallel Postulate: Through a point not on a given line, there is exactly one line parallel to the given line

• Things which are equal to the same thing are also equal to one another

• If equals are added to equals, the wholes are equal

• If equals are subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal

• Things which coincide with one another are equal to one another

• The whole is greater than the part
