How can you describe the parts of an expression?

There are 3 terms.

The coefficient is 7 because 7 is the number the variable is being multiplied by.

Like-Terms

How do we combine like terms?

​For example 6x-4+3-5x

Like terms are 6x-4+3-5x

Add the terms ​6x+(-5x)+(-4)+(+3)

The sign in front of the term is crucial!!!​

1. Use circles, underlines, or a highlighter to identify like terms INCLUDING THE SIGN IN FRONT OF IT

2. Combine the terms by adding like terms together

Combining Like Terms

Use the signs in front of the terms.

Only terms that share the same variable (raised to the same power) can be combined.

Always ADD the terms together but remember to look at the signs before it!

• The distributive property allows us to multiply each term inside parentheses by the number outside the parentheses. 

• 4(3 + 4) = 4(3) + 4(4)

Using Variables

• Multiply 5 times x

• Multiply 5 times 6

• We multiply the outside number by all terms on the inside of the parentheses.
