Instead of using a number, a letter is used to represent the azimuthal quantum number:

ℓ = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4…

ℓ = s, p, d, f, g…

​The Azimuthal Quantum Number= (n-1)

The magnetic orbital quantum number (m_l) provides the orientation of the orbital shape along the x, y, and z axes

The magnetic spin quantum number (m_s) indicates the direction of spin of each electron. One electron spins clockwise and the other spins counterclockwise.

​The Magnetic Spin Quantum Number:
m_s: –½ and +½
