Tissue- a group or mass of similar cells working together to perform common functions.

Epithelial Tissue- Characteristics

-Covers all human external and internal body surfaces.
-Main glandular (glands) tissue
-Attached to underlying connective tissue at basement membrane

Epithelial Tissue-Characteristics

• Usually has no vascular tissue (avascular)-no blood supply

• Cells reproduce rapidly, resulting in rapid healing (and scarring)

• Cells packed tightly together
  

Epithelial Tissue

All epithelial tissues have two surfaces: an apical and a basal surface
1. The apical surface is the unattached surface
2. The basal surface is attached to the basement membrane

Types of Epithelial Tissues

​Epithelial tissues have two parts to their names

First part describes the arrangement of cells
Simple: a single layer of cells
Stratified: two or more layers of cells
Pseudostratified: appears to be layered due to the various heights of cells (and varying positions of nuclei)

Second part tells you the shape of the individual cells
Squamous: Flattened
Cuboidal: Box shaped
Columnar: Tall and shaped like columns
