The final team set off for Nome with Balto in the lead.

The air was so cold it hurt to breathe.

After a few miles, the dogs stopped.

They could no longer see the trail.

Minutes crawled by.

They would freeze to death.

Balto started running again.

He had found the trail.

Then Kaasen looked down.

Balto's front paws were in water.

The team had been heading into a frozen river.

Balto had kept the team from falling in the water.

The dogs and sled were lifted into the air.

Kaasen tried to help the team.

The medicine dropped into the snow.

He searched frantically with his bare hands.

The people of Nome woke up.

Kassen knelt next to Balto and gently pulled chunks of ice off his paws.
