Factors Affecting Climate

Zones of Latitude –
• Low or tropical– found on either side of the equator, extending to

the Tropic of Cancer in the north and the Tropic of Capricorn in the
south. Lands here are hot all year long.

• Middle or temperate– lie at the middle latitudes, between the

tropics and the polar regions. In these zones temperatures can vary
greatly.

• High or polar– encircle the North

Pole and South Pole, and are cold
all year

Defining a Climate Region

•The two most significant factors in defining different
climates are temperature and precipitation.

• Geographers use latitude zones to help define climate in

five general regions –

1. Low Latitudes (Tropical)
2. Dry
3. Mid-Latitudes (Temperate)
4. High-Latitudes (Polar)
5. Highland
