Conventions, in writing, are the agreed upon rules and standards for writing and include:

• Spelling

• Capitalization

Punctuation tools include:

Grammar

focuses on parts of speech, subject-verb agreement, word order, and verb tenses

Parts of speech include: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and articles
Subject-Verb agreement means that when the subject is singular, so is the verb and if the subject is plural, the verb is too
Example: She (singular) sings well.
They (plural) sing well.

Grammar (continued)

The order of words in English sentences is subject/verb/object
Example: He (subject) jumped (verb) the log (object).
However, word order refers to the verb being moved in front of the subject when a question is asked.
Example: She is going shopping. is a statement. to make it a question, the verb would go first: Is she going shopping?
Verb tense refer to the time an action took place: past, present, or future; you need to keep the verb tense the same, sticking with whichever tense you started with.

While it is not one of the main categories in grammar, sentence structure can also be tied into grammar.
Sentence fragments are incomplete sentences, usually missing a subject, verb, or both a subject and a verb
Run-on sentences are sentences that contain 2. complete thoughts without any words being added, removed, or rearranged.
