Gravitational Force

All objects are made up of matter.
The amount of matter in an object is its mass and is measured in g or kg.

Let's look at the example. All three containers are the same size and shape. BUT they do not have the same mass.
WHY NOT?

​Mass

Gravity is an attractive force between two objects that pulls the objects toward each other.

We measure gravity or gravitational force in Newtons (N).

Objects with a lot of mass produce a lot of gravity.

Objects with a little mass produce very little gravity.

So, the Sun produces a lot more gravitational pull than the Earth. Sun holds 8 planets but Earth only holds the Moon.

​So which of the three containers above has the most gravitational pull?

If we could see the atoms of material in each container, we would see a lot more atoms in the copper compared to the other three.

Weight is the measurement of the force of gravity on an object's mass.

You measure weight with a scale in pounds.

​Weight can change BUT Mass can't

A gravitational field is the area surrounding an object where gravity is pulling towards its center.

The blue line with arrows pointing towards the center of Earth are called field lines. They show the direction of the gravitational force.
