What do we mean by self directed learner (SDL)?

Knowles (1975) identified an SDL as an adult who seeks to take learning initiative, diagnose learning needs, formulate learning goals, identify learning resources, and choose or implement learning plans and evaluation.

The SDL concept has taken an increased relevance with the advent of online learning and the need to coach students at a distance in their learning activities.
